Introduction
The future is beautifully mixed and we shouldn’t fret about it because this is a healthy thing for humanity. This evolution is a testament to the rich tapestry of humanity and how it’s evolving in this lifetime. In schools, workplaces, and communities worldwide, we get to witness a colorful mosaic of ethnicities, a very real reflection of the globalized world we live in. As globalization continues to shape our societies, our embrace of multiculturalism becomes not just a choice but a total necessity – and responsibility – for fostering understanding and unity among us. It becomes important for breaking down racial barriers, biases, fears, and misunderstandings.
How has globalization impacted our world as it is today?
Globalization has revolutionized the way we interact, fostering international mobility and interracial marriages at unprecedented rates. The recent changes in how ethnicities are classified, such as the US Census Bureau’s shift in its approach to data, underscore the growing recognition of our world’s multiracial population. In case you might have missed it, in 2020, the US took a major step by changing how the Census Bureau asks people to classify their ethnic group and reported 20M more people who identify as multiracial. 20 million people! Acknowledging this blending of cultures shows how big of an impact globalization has made to the intricate dynamics of human diversity.
A quick look at the macro benefits
There are many benefits to increased diversity, including improving cultural empathy and appreciation for each other. Scientifically, the increasing mix of genes within the global population holds promise for reducing the prevalence of certain genetic disorders. We can also draw parallels from the animal kingdom and see the value in genetic diversity. On the whole, we can break the cultural silos around the world and hope to prevent misunderstandings on all levels, including tensions when it comes to wars and geopolitics.
Looking at the micro benefits
On a personal level, multiculturalism enriches our lives in many ways, when we’re working with others, connecting with others in our local community, or traveling between countries. We gain a deeper understanding of diverse cultures, fostering a sense of belonging and appreciation for our differences. Embracing our unique appearances and traditions allows us to celebrate the richness of our heritage while seamlessly blending into environments.
We are each 50% of the difference
Growing up, my sister used to say, “When it comes to differences – whether it be cultural, personal, or professional views – remember that YOU are always 50% of the difference.” She meant that it’s important to recognize that we’re a part of – not separate from – the difference in every situation and that fewer misunderstandings will occur when we keep this empathy.
I used to work in the travel & hospitality industry and saw the positive impacts of multiculturalism most in that chapter of my career. People love traveling to see how others live and to experience “living like a local.” A famous American writer, Mark Twain, once shared a very famous quote we all are familiar with in the travel industry, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” He believed that travel can broaden people’s perspectives and help us stay open-minded about people, places, and things. His quote reminds us that travel can empower people to adapt to new surroundings, engage with different people of various cultures, and share new experiences out of our day-to-day comfort zone.
Final thoughts…
In embracing multiculturalism, we embrace the future with wide arms and open minds. Immigration and globalization are not mere trends, but enduring forces shaping our world whether we like it or not. By celebrating diversity and fostering inclusivity, we pave the way for a brighter tomorrow and for future generations. As the world population continues to grow and mix more, so too does the imperative to embrace a shared humanity, united in our diversity and the truth that each of us makes up 50% of the difference.
